Car Market Overview July 26

This update reviews the latest position of the UK new and used car markets, combining new car registration figures

up to the end of May 2026 with a snapshot of conditions in the used sector. All insights are based on the market

outlook as of 25th June 2026.

New car sales

According to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data, UK new car registrations reached 160,662

units in May, representing a 7.1% rise and the strongest performance for the month of May since 2019. However, the

market has yet to fully recover, with volumes still 12.6% below pre-pandemic benchmarks.
